Abstract

The article focuses on two books. One of the books is "Cost Reduction Systems: Target Costing and Kaizen Costing," by Yasuhiro Monden. This book covers in comprehensive detail by using many charts and tables the important topic of designing a product to a cost target. The final chapter compares this approach to activity-based costing, which is often practiced in the United States. The second book is "Workplace by Design: Mapping the High-Performance Workscape," by Franklin Becker and Fritz Stecle. Although this book has nothing to say about product development per se, it may be useful if one is considering how to arrange their facilities to improve teamwork, especially multifunctional team-work.
