Abstract

Objective: to describe accidental wounds and injuries associated to infants wakers. Subjects and methods: a retrospective survey was performed to determine the reasons to use infant walkers, the frecuency of related accidents and type of resultant injuries through direct questions to mothers of 250 infants aged 6 to 18 months being cared at a university associated well baby clinic for middle class people. Results: walkers were sometime used by 169 (67.6%) infants, in 77 (45.6%) of them a related accident that caused 1.5 injuries per affected child was recorded, 10% of these were considered to have been serious. The most frequent reasons to use walkers were child's boredom and walking training. Reasons to abstain of its use were fear for injuries and medical advise. Conclusions: infant walkers are dangerous and should always be used under extreme caution.
