A Study of Correlation between Proteinuria and Histological Findings in Lupus Nephritis Patient

Abstract

Introduction: Lupus Nephritis (LN) is one of the serious manifestations of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). It has different histological findings indicating deterioration of renal function. The aim of this study is to find out any correlation between proteinuria with different histological types of LN. Materials and Methods: Diagnosis of SLE was done on the basis of American College of Rheumatology (ACR) Criteria. Thirty patients of SLE with renal involvement were selected. After written informed consent all patients were undergone renal biopsy and tissue was analyzed for histological type and grading (WHO). Proteinuria was calculated from 24 hours urinary protein estimation by standard methods. Descriptive variables like age, family history, drug history symptoms etc was presented with frequency and percentages and dependent variable proteinuria and independent variable different histological type was analyzed by ANOVA test. Results: All patients were female (30) and majorities were at child bearing age. Most of the patients presented with photosensitivity. Anti-Ds DNA was positive among all (100%) patients. Among 30 patients, 6 (20%) patients had >3 g/24 hour proteinuria. All patients had abnormal eGFR. Common histological type was found class lV (40%). After analysis, significant statistical correlation was found between proteinuria with different histological type (r -0.435, P < 0.05). Conclusion: It can be said that LN have different histological type with deterioration of renal function in terms of high proteinuira. Changes of proteinuria follow significant correlation with different histological types.
