Abstract

Traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) is an uncommon, but serious ophthalmologic sequealae of head trauma. The uncommon nature of this condition contributes to the lack of knowledge regarding its epidemiology, pathophysiology, and natural history, and to the controversy regarding its treatment. The results of medical and surgical strategies for treating this injury have not been demonstrated to be better than those achieved without treatment. Regardless of the lack of knowledge concerning TON, the management rests on an accurate diagnosis, which begins with a comprehensive clinical assessment and appropriate neuroimaging.
