Abstract
The aim of the study was to compare physically and chemically three quality protein maize hybrids H-431, A-PANTERA and P-30G54 (QH) and six molecular lines (ML) with yellow corn (YC). Hectolitric weight, 1000- grain weight, length, width and thickness, proximate analysis and amino acids content by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) were determined. In general, values for physical characteristics for ML and QH were higher (P < 0.05) than those of YC. Values for moisture, protein and carbohydrates for YC were lower (P < 0.05) than those of ML and QH; ash (P ≥ 0.05) and lipids (P < 0.05) were lower in QH. In general, compared to YC, ML contained more lysine (4.4 vs. 3.3, P < 0.05), isoleucine, valine, histidine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, serine, glycine, arginine and alanine. QH contained more lysine (H-431 6.3, A-PANTERA 4.2 y P-30G54 2.7; P < 0.05), leucine, isoleucine, phenylalanine, valine, methionine, tyrosine, threonine, histidine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, serine, glycine, arginine and alanine. © 2009 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
