A discussion is presented of data communications, particularly when used for telemetry purposes. The work explains the evolution of modems and ways in which they may be used. It introduces basic multiplexing techniques, and briefly discusses transmission security against errors. A description is given of how these various factors can be combined in the design of practical telemetry equipment, capable of transmitting both analogue and digital data. Some typical applications of the different forms of systems which are used in the oil industry for the smaller types of system are outlined.
