Highlights of the 46th Annual Scientific Session of the American College of Cardiology

Abstract

Results from a number of major clinical trials were presented to more than 30,000 health care professionals - cardiologists, internists and general practitioners, research scientists, and cardiac nurses from around the world - gathered in Anaheim, California, from March 16 to 19, 1997. The latest developments in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cardiovascular diseases made this a particularly meaningful meeting, with the greatest emphasis on: thrombolytic therapy; cost-saving studies in acute coronary syndromes and in congestive heart failure (CHF); the postangioplasty value of new GP IIb/IIIa receptor inhibitors; an entirely new class of calcium antagonists; specific angiotensin-II-receptor antagonists in elderly CHF patients; and the continued usefulness of lipid-lowering therapy in older postmyocardial infarction patients.
