Abstract
Absolute value equations and inequalities in one variable are important topics in mathematics that must be mastered by 10th-grade students in Senior High School (SMA). This study aims to identify students' learning obstacles in this concept using a qualitative method with interpretive and critical paradigms. The research subjects were 40 10th-grade social science students at SMAS Kartika XIX-1 Bandung, West Java. Data were collected through tests and interviews. The test consisted of four questions validated by mathematics experts. After the test, observations and semi-structured interviews were conducted to identify students' learning obstacles. The research results show three types of learning obstacles: epistemological, ontogenic, and didactic. Epistemological obstacles occur due to students' incomplete understanding and lack of familiarity with applying different concepts. Ontogenic obstacles arise because of the complexity of the material for students. Didactic obstacles occur due to ineffective teaching methods. These findings illustrate students' challenges in understanding absolute value equations and inequalities in one variable. Therefore, a didactic design is needed to minimize the identified learning obstacles.
