Abstract

In present-day Catalonia, schools have to deal with the challenges of increasing plurilingualism among pupils, satisfy social demands for languagetuition and fulfil their historical role of transmitting the Catalan language. We explore current discourse in the world of Catalan schooling. Our theoretical approach seeks to combine the postulates of linguistic anthropology and qualitative sociolinguistics with social-interaction-based postulates on language learning. By analysing interviews and official documents, we examine the shared points and highlight the tensions and contradictions which can be observed in the formulation of various discourses. © Maison des sciences de l'homme.
