INTERPRETASI MAKNA RIYA’ DALAM AL-QUR’AN: Studi Kritis Perilaku Riya’ Dalam Kehidupan Sehari-hari

Abstract

Allah created human as the Caliph on earth to carry a mandate with two sophisticated devices: minds and hearts. As a creature with reason and heart, human can not be separated from the lust that can make them astray. This paper will discuss Riya(ostentation) behavior in the perspective of the Quran. This article employs thematic methods to interpret the Quranic verses related to Riya. This is a library research with intertextuality analysis to those verses. This research foundtwo meaning of Riya namely as a characteristic of munafiq (hypocrite)and as a syirikasghar (lesser shirk) or hidden polytheism that could lead to major shirk (syirikakbar) In the context of this writing, Riyameans to do good deeds or worship with the intention not to please Allah but to be seen by people and gain their praise and respect.
