Biogeographic and bioclimatic distribution of Klasea Cass. and Serratula L

Abstract

Since our first studies of Serratula L. and Klasea Cass. in the lberian Peninsula we have detected a significant correspondence between the distribution of these species and the biogeographic and bioclimatic units. This study was conducted in order to describe this global distribution of Serratula and Klasea (Eurasia and northern Africa). We determined the geographical coordinates of around 2.000 specimens belonging to the 54 taxa recognised for Serratula and Klasea, some of these from our field studies. These coordinates were plotted on bioclimatic maps and we enumerate the biogeographic provinces where they occur. The relationship is established between these taxa and the world's main vegetation zones. A hierarchical agglomerative clustering analysis was done based on the species presence/absence in the biogeographic provinces. © 2011, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
