Abstract

Being on the high school swim team — or any other individually competitive sport — helps teach kids how to set goals and plan for achieving them, resilience, and grit. Along with team sports, participation also fosters accountability and loyalty. The interaction that student-athletes have with the adults who coach them helps them be seen as whole people and offers the potential for building their self-confidence.
