Abstract

Natural mortalities of kudu due to malnutrition on game ranches in South Africa has been reported. Tannins inhibiting digestion could be the cause. IVDMD was tested in 40 browse plants and related to tannin content. Tests with various concentrations of tannic acid and condensed tannin show a decline in IVDMD with increases of the phenols. Key words: Kudu, digestibility, mortality, tannins
