My approach to respiratory sepsis: pulmonary

Abstract

Respiratory sepsis is one of the leading causes of sepsis-related mortality worldwide, with significant impact on the healthcare burden in hospitals. While there are standardised guidelines for the management of sepsis in general, we aim to specifically review the approach to respiratory sepsis. This review discusses common aetiologies and the pathophysiology of respiratory sepsis, as well as aspects of management such as oxygenation and ventilation, methods of source identification, airway secretion management, and the role of glucocorticoids.
