Abstract

Poor film processing can only result in poor image quality, which can also result in the exam repetition, waste of time and money spending besides increasing the dose absorbed to the patient. The film processing conditions (time, temperature and the chemicals' activity) produce changes in optical density of base plus fog, sensibility and contrast of the radiographic film. Thus this work presents a computer model that predicts the effect of radiographic film developing process on optical density formation. This model has been developed by introducing parameters that represent the effect of the conditions of film developing in optical density's equation, which had been established as a function of the exposure technique and physical characteristics of radiological imaging system. These parameters have been determined from experimental measures and characteristic curves analysis. The results showed a good agreement between the optical densities measured and simulated for some conditions of film processing. Besides, the developed computer method can become a valuable didactic resource for training of new professionals for the radiological sector. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.
