Abstract

The central importance of the Mate Recognition System of sexually reproducing species is explained. The Specific Mate Recognition Concept bears importantly on our understanding of many aspects of anuran reproductive biology, including the nature and evolution of species. Mate recognition signals appear shaped by natural selection to provide for the meeting of conspecific sexual partners, and are characterized by a stability which makes them taxonomic characters of the first order. © 1981 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
