Abstract

In this essay, the author, Dr. Louis Sullivan, describes his life experiences, having been born in the American South during the period of legal racial segregation. Despite many obstacles, Dr. Sullivan became a physician who founded the predominantly Black Morehouse School of Medicine and served as Secretary of the United States Department of Health and Human Services.
