Use of AOAC International Method Performance Statistics in the Laboratory

Abstract

Method performance statistics are included with many AOAC methods and are estimates of precision or variability. These statistics can provide useful guidelines as to the degree of precision that can be achieved when a method is used routinely. Indeed, defining method performance in a practical, meaningful, and standardized way is one of the goals of the AOAC Official Methods program. This paper gives some guidelines for understanding and interpreting AOAC method performance statistics for practical use in the laboratory.
