Abstract

Benefits that human derive in connection with ecosystems are called ecosystem services (ESs). In recent years, research into ESs has gained in importance due to rapidly changing ecosystems to satisfy growing human needs for food, water and natural resources. Rapid anthropogenic activities are also adversely impacting the ecosystem, impairing the natural fauna and flora, as well as humans and their wellbeing. Thus, research interest in dismantling this unwanted nexus between ecosystems and human is rapidly growing. The present chapter gives an overview of ESs, their needs for the future, and the role of ESs in building robust and sustainable community across the world.
