Abstract

Narcolepsy is characterized by excessive daytime sleep and cataplexy. An important feature is an increase in the HLA-DQB1*0602 allele along with a decrease of hypocretinergic cells in the hypothalamus. Future studies are necessary to clarify the physiopathological mechanism involved in narcolepsy. Non-pharmacological treatment is mainly scheduled naps. Pharmacological treatment is pointed to treat the cataplexy and the excessive daytime sleep. © Copyright Moreira Jr. Editera.
