Abstract

SQL is used as the principle software engineering tool to aid the production of a database of Islamic patterns. These patterns can be found by searching facilities using geometric properties, such the symmetry. The SQL is used to automatically generate HTML for the web site (www.tilingsearch.org). The database also covers aspects of the internal documentation which includes the mathematical analysis of the patterns, and photos, if available. Checks are also performed using SQL to verify aspects of the system. The open source implementation of SQL is used to allow the entire system to be run on any computer. Currently, there is no SQL server on the web site, but a simple set of options is used to aid searching.
