Abstract

Internet-based transportation systems are becoming widespread due to advances in Internet, computing, geospatial information system (GIS) and intelligent sensor technologies. They are essential to enable Smart City concepts. Traffic analysis and user statistics are very important to improve Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning in Internet networks. In this paper, we present the first user statistics and traffic analysis of the Qronectate project, a government initiative that offers public Internet access in buses. Results shown that the number of users has not achieved its momentum. Therefore, common statistics such as average users age, number of days used per week, time spend on bus and more visited Webpages were identified and confirmed by applying a survey. To the authors knowledge this is the first work to analyze such networks. © Springer International Publishing 2013.
