The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to examine the evidence for clinical analgesic efficacy of fortified foods and nutraceuticals tested in dogs with osteoarthritis. In four electronic bibliographic databases, 1096 publications were retrieved, plus 20 additional publications from internal sources. Fifty-four articles were included, comprising 69 trials, divided into 9 categories of treatment compounds. The efficacy assessment, considering the level of quality of the trials, presents clinical analgesic efficacy of omega-3 based fortified food and omega-3 supplements and cannabidiol (to a lesser degree). Our analyses also show a weak efficacy of collagen, and a very marked non-effect of chondroitin-glucosamine nutraceuticals, which leads us to recommend that the last products should no longer be recommended for pain management in canine osteoarthritis.
