Abstract

Trace fossil communities are mainly bathymetry-controlled. Their relative depth sequence has been established in sedimentary series of up to Cambrian age. Actual depth figures can now be added from counterparts in the present oceans. As exemplified by the spreite burrows, behavioural response to a bathymetric gradient in food suply is suggested as the main reason for the change of trace fossils with depth. © 1967.
