Describes the new #3.5 billion decentralised sewage treatment system for the River Emscher industrial area in Germany. The system comprising stormwater management, closed sewer mains and natural brooks and streams will replace the existing network of open waste water channels. Mine subsidence originally ruled out a closed sewerage system. Six waste water treatment plants for 100 000 to 1300 000 population equivalent are planned. These plants are described. Various flow and retention strategies have been modelled. Stormwater will be decoupled from the sewer network, using surface discharge, to reduce sewage loads and treatment costs. The costs of these plans together with sources of financial support are outlined. (J.M.McLaughlin)
