Abstract
W. T. BELL MEMBER A/ME G. A. AUBERLINDER The recent achievement oj new records in well depths has presented a new set oj problems to the perjorating industry. Resulting extremes in pressures and temperatures have pointed up the limitations oj existing tools and explosives , thereby imposing new challenges jor equipment and techniques. This paper describes some oj the major problems stemming jrom deep-well mud pressures and temperatures. Proper techniques jor measuring bottom-hole temperatures are discussed. Thermal limitations oj currently used wire-line explosive tools and components are emphasized along with recommended ratings and specialized operating techniques. Misconceived notions relating to the capabilities oj conventional explosives are treated. An answer to the trend to deeper wells with higher pressures and temperatul'es is introduced in the jorm oj a newly developed, high-temperature explosive package jor the steel retrievable shaped-charge gun.
