Ideology, Politics and Media: A Critical Discourse Analysis of News Headline about Pakistan Democratic Movement

Abstract

This study aims to do a Critical Discourse Analysis of the news headlines about Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM). For the critical discourse analysis of this current issue, twenty five news headlines are randomly selected from the regional newspapers. The critical discourse analysis of the chosen headlines reflects that a single political issue is represented differently in different newspapers, and there are multiple perspectives on a single political issue. 'Dawn' represents both perspectives of government and opposition. The headlines of 'Express' shows the unity and strength of government. The ideological square of Van Dijk reveals that PDM is promoting good and neglecting bad about itself while government is emphasizing good about its policies and hiding the bad aspects of economy and progress. The headlines are a depiction of the editor's personal inclination towards the political matters. The study shows that newspapers are an index of the newspaper editor's subjectivity.
