Abstract

Presently, there is no FDA approved pharmacological treatment for Trichotillomania (TTM). As is the case, multiple drugs and drug classes have been explored for the treatment of TTM, including: antidepressants, antipsychotics, CNS stimulants, and other emerging therapies including N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) and nutraceuticals (St. John's wort, milk thistle and others). Current evidence suggests that most antidepressants and antipsychotics are not effective in the treatment of TTM, however, there is growing evidence for the use of NAC.
