A case of hepatocellular carcinoma associated with HCV antibody-positive primary biliary cirrhosis, treated with established surgical resection

Abstract

We report a case of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) associated with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), treated with established surgical resection. A 68-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital in May 1989 because of liver tumor. She had been diagnosed as asymptomatic PBC with Sjögren syndrome in 1984. She was treated with partial hepatectomy. Histology of the tumor showed well-differentiated HCC (Edmondson's grade I), and that of non-tumoral tissue revealed PBC (Scheuer's stage IV). In our case, the test on hepatitis viruses markers was positive for anti-HCV and HCV-RNA. It was suggested some relations between the HCV infection and the occurrence of HCC in PBC. © 1993, The Japan Society of Hepatology. All rights reserved.
