Tall, dark and uncommonly handsome, Roberto Bolle is the partner of choice of several of the world's greatest ballerinas. Yet he too is a great dancer, and in his first interview for a British publication, held in London in May, during the rehearsal period for Darcey Bussell's retirement programme at Sadler's Wells, he talked to Gerald Dowler about his partnership with her, his desire to broaden and deepen his own artistry and his hopes for his career. Softly spoken and thoughtful, Bolle is the antithesis of the Italian stereotype, and indeed stands alone as an Italian male dancer of world class. Photographs by Luciano Romano.
