La precarización de la periferia. Movilidad y desigualdad residencial en Madrid (2013-2019)

Abstract

The revaluation of the historic centres of large European cities contributes to a process of suburbanization of poverty. The literature that supports this hypothesis, examines how there is an increasing displacement towards the most peripheral places of the cities. This hypothesis is analysed for the case of the city of Madrid, covering the period 2013-2019, using a novel methodology that combines the techniques of factorial ecology for the study of the fragmented city with the multivariate analysis of population flows. This allows us to go beyond the centre-periphery analysis to capture the complexity of the city. It concludes that in Madrid, as in other European cities, the suburbanization of poverty is confirmed, but in a complex way that leads to describe it as the precariousness of the periphery.
