Abstract

Online games and virtual worlds are playing an increasingly important role in many children's daily lives, while internet access continues to expand world wide. The confluence of these two trends is creating more opportunities to reach children of different cultural backgrounds throughout the world; to teach them in fun and engaging ways about cultural diversity, inspiring openness and acceptance of other ways of life. This goal lies along a path beset by many hurdles, but these can be overcome by significant technical, pedagogical, and business opportunities to create a positive social impact. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.
