With the integration of New IT (e. g., Internet of Things, big data, cloud computing and digital twins, etc. ) and manufacturing, a number of countries had put forward their national advanced manufacturing development strategies, such as Industrial Internet in the U. S. and Industry 4. 0 in Germany, etc. At the same time, under the background of building "manufacturing power" and "network power", China has also successively introduced the manufacturing development strategies, namely "Made in China 2025" and "Internet +". One of the common core ideas of various manufacturing strategies is to achieve smart manufacturing, and the common means is to integrate the physical and cyber worlds of manufacturing through New IT and artificial intelligence technology. In addition, service is also listed as one of the key contents for smart manufacturing by various national advanced manufacturing development strategies. Since smart service has become the core of the industrial pattern innovation, service-oriented manufacturing is getting more and more attentions. Therefore, on the basis of analyzing and summarizing the development trend and important characteristics of smart manufacturing, integrating the idea of New IT and services, service-oriented smart manufacturing (SoSM) is proposed. Besides, the implementation framework of SoSM is designed, and the connotation, key implementation technologies and future research directions of SoSM are discussed.
