Abstract

In this paper, a new high temperature resistant thermoplastic compound for slide bearing applications under severe serving conditions was developed. Carbon fibers, Teflon particles, graphite powder, Titanium dioxide (TiO 2) and Zinc sulfide (ZnS) particles with an average diameter of 300 nm were used as filler materials. A big influence of the new filler materials and their combinations on the tribological behavior of the corresponding PEEK compounds was detected. Especially at higher temperatures and under higher normal loads, one of the new compounds (PEEK6) was found to be an excellent material with outstanding tribological behavior. With PEEK6, a specific wear rate and coefficient of friction (cof) lower than for the best commercially available PEEK compound (PEEK4) were measured. For specific testing parameters, PEEK6 showed a cof lower than 0.1.
