This book is a two-volume collection of notes on political and religious history, trade, ethnology, geologic regions and natural history written by Colonel Samuel Barret Miles, long-time British official in the Persian Gulf and Oman in particular. The author consults and critiques al-Izkiwi’s Kashf al-ghummah (Removing Consternation) for the pre-Islamic story of Oman. He covers Persian Gulf trade and politics from the 16th century, as European powers entered the region, and the history of Oman’s place in the East-West trading patterns from earliest times. He then turns to the Yaruba dynasty and the Bu Saʻid family.
