Abstract

Extensive fieldwalking in the Swartkrans and Umuritzi (colloquially also known as the Makapan) Valleys in the Northern Province of South Africa, near Potgeitersrus, has revealed a rich archaeological landscape. The pattern suggests a differential appreciation of affordances within the environment. The importance of this new understanding is that it contextualises the archaeological assemblages from the im portant Cave of Hearths (Makapansgat) site in the Umuritzi Valley.
