Ankylosing spondylitis, a chronic inflammatory rheumatoid condition of young adults, is the prototype of social illness. The clinical features are described. The condition poses problems of reclassification for work as resumption of normal work is difficult in the case of a patient so affected. Physical treatment combined with antiinflammatory drugs is of major importance. It halts development of the condition and averts the caricatural deformities of the affliction.
