Occupational health and management quality of the entrepreneur-manager: Bibliometric and thematic analysis and mapping attempt

Abstract

In a context where entrepreneur-managers experience higher levels of stress than the general population, chronic sleep disorders, and symptoms of burnout, which significantly impair management efficiency, it is crucial to gain a comprehensive understanding of the intricate relationship between occupational health and the quality of management in entrepreneur-managers. This understanding is vital for ensuring business sustainability and entrepreneurial well-being, as these factors significantly affect their management efficiency, making this relationship critical for organizational performance and long-term viability. This study explores and examines this relationship through a comprehensive bibliometric and thematic analysis of 849 articles published in the SCOPUS database between 1974 and 2024, representing five decades of scholarly research in this interdisciplinary field. The VOS viewer and Biblioshiny tools were employed to identify emerging research trends, conceptual frameworks, and research gaps while systematically mapping the current state of research on the interplay between occupational health and management quality in entrepreneur-managers. The analysis highlights key trends, conceptual advancements, and critical research gaps, providing a foundation for further exploration in this domain and revealing important patterns in how occupational health challenges specifically impact managerial decision-making processes and organizational outcomes. This paper contributes to the literature by offering a comprehensive and systematic examination of entrepreneurial health management, systematically mapping the issue and identifying directions for future research while establishing a robust theoretical foundation for this emerging field. The findings provide valuable insights for theorists and practitioners involved in the field of entrepreneurial health management, paving the way for future research and practical interventions aimed at enhancing entrepreneurial well-being and business sustainability, with important implications for developing targeted health interventions that can improve both individual well-being and organizational resilience in entrepreneurial settings.
