The Material Culture of Roman and Early Christian Pilgrimage: an Introduction

Abstract

This contribution introduces the main topics of this special issue of HEROM dedicated to the “The Material Culture of Roman and Early Christian Pilgrimage”. It furthermore discusses the use of the term “pilgrimage” to describe pre-Christian sacred travel and suggests some potential ways for- ward in approaching a Christian pilgrimage site, such as Aya Tekla (Cilicia, Turkey), from the perspective of material culture.
