Abstract

After a brief history of the evolution of the concept of bioeconomy, we give an overall view of its present status in the world and in Brazil, concentrating on health, primary and industrial production. In the end, we describe a minimal set of necessary conditions that will allow both Brazil and Latin America to profit from the opportunities offered by bioeconomy.
