Abstract
COPD is the second most common lung disease in the United Kingdom (UK) with approximately 1.2 million people diagnosed. Estimated annual healthcare cost of £1.8 billion. COPD is the 4th and 5th most common cause of death for men and women, respectively. UK has the 3rd highest mortality rate for COPD in Europe, and the 12th highest mortality rate in the world. COPD is the third leading cause of death globally, accounting for approximately 3 million deaths annually (WHO). Primary causes include long-term exposure to irritants such as cigarette smoke, air pollution, and occupational dust and chemicals. Characterized by airflow limitation. Symptoms include coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath Smoking is the leading risk factor for COPD, with approximately 80% of COPD cases attributed to smoking. Affects older adults, with prevalence increasing with age, and younger individuals, with a history of smoking or exposure to environmental pollutants. Associated with a high burden of morbidity and mortality. Management involves a combination of pharmacological treatments, smoking cessation interventions, pulmonary rehabilitation, and self-management strategies to optimize symptom control and improve quality of life.
