Abstract

Dynamic positioning systems (DP) which were once considered a luxury that only a few operators could afford are fast becoming indispensable tools for many subsea operations. This article provides a general explanation of the various systems, functions, and applications of DP. Acoustic position reference is reviewed as are radiolocation systems. Selecting the right system is discussed.
