Abstract

The development of protective armor systems via enhancement of the ballistic resistance and reduced weight represented a great interest in recent years with the unfortunate increase of conflicts and wars. To optimize the resistance of the ballistic armors, a comprehensive analysis of the material and structure of conventional armors is essential. Hence, several types of researches about hard and soft body armors have been reviewed, also, attention is given to failure mechanisms and the type of approach in these researches. To obtain an effective manner for review, this article used brief data tables via a review of all the important parameters such as projectile shape or caliber, the velocity of the projectile, structure of armor, and the major findings. Important keys about the conventional hard structure (mono, dual, and triple) with the soft structures have been concluded, furthermore, the study concluded some points about the selection of materials to the armors to be fabricated. The recommendations suggested many substantial points and guidelines, which can be used in order to construct considerable new armors.
