Abstract

Emergency contraception can be defined as the use of a device or medication after intercourse to prevent pregnancy and has been the focus of much current international interest. Many forms of emergency contraception are being studied in search of effective methods. Levonorgestrel and mifepristone (RU 486) are two compounds that have attracted recent attention. Emergency contraception is an important component of the contraceptive range that ultimately may contribute to a reduction in the number of unplanned pregnancies. The various controversies surrounding the use of emergency contraception need to be confronted and explored if the method is to be used appropriately.
