Abstract

This essay aims to analyze the ambiguities in the liberation war conducted by the French revolutionaries in several European countries. It follows the limits, which are not always so clear, between the attempts of "exporting the revolution" and the realization of a "war of conquest". The different positions taken by the Jacobins and the Girondists regarding this matter and the reaction to the French presence of the populations that were "freed" or "dominated" by Napoleon are also considered.
