Abstract

The hexane-sol. fraction of an ethanolic soln. of com. tolu balsam, accounting for most of the aroma, was shown to be a complex mixt. of aromatic and terpenoid compounds. Benzoic and cinnamic acids, the corresponding alcs., aldehydes, Et, benzyl, and cinnamyl esters, Me cinnamate, styrene, eugenol, vanillin, benzyl ferulate or isoferulate, ferulic acid, and 1,2-diphenylethane were identified. A number of mono- and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons and alcs. were present in low concn., of which three mono- and fourteen sesquiterpene hydrocarbons were identified. The balsam also contained numerous triterpenoids including dammaradienone, 20R-hydroxydammarenone, 20S-dammarenediol, hydroxyhopanone, oleanolic acid, sumaresinolic acid, 3-oxo-6╬▓-hydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid, urs-12-en-3-on-28-al, and 20R,24╬╛2-ocotillone, of which the last three are new.
