Abstract
The assessment of rotator cuff tears is particularly difficult because such lesions can arise without a preceding accident and without causing pain or functional defects, only making themselves felt at the time of the event insured. The steps of the assessment are presented with the necessary requirements. The D-13 report is the most important basis for the later expert assessment. An MRI examination should follow very soon after, and the communication between the referring doctor and the radiologist is of decisive importance. The assessment always relates to the functional status of a joint or an extremity before the accident that has happened during the insured period. If no damage caused by the accident can be demonstrated it is not possible to justify a pension. It is advisable to prepare a checklist with points for and against damage caused by the accident and to evaluate the facts in the light of this list. The evaluation should be justified in comprehensible terms in the expert report; references to the assessment tables in the current assessment literature allow an objective comparison of the estimated reduction of earning capacity. © 2007 Springer Medizin Verlag.
