Tarsal coalition in a child

Abstract

Tarsal coalition is a pathological congenital condition in which a connection occurs between two or more bones of tarsus. This disorder is quite difficult to diagnose, especially for an unexperienced specialist. We present a clinical observation of an incomplete osseous calcaneonavicular coalition in a 12-year-old child who underwent a comprehensive examination, including a computer tomography (CT) of feet, and treatment of this foot pathology in the orthopedic department of the Ilizarov Center. Radiographing in combination with CT of foot helps to reliably determine tarsal coalition and its features. Early detection of this disorder makes it possible to develop correct tactic of treatment for a patient and prevent degenerative changes in tarsal joints.
