Abstract
Bio-based lubricants, which are produced from organic, renewable resources, offer effective substitutes for conventional petroleum-based lubricants. This review article aims to analyse, compare and contrast the biochemical characteristics of mineral-based lubricants against plant-based lubricants and emphasize their individual benefits. Additionally, the use of non-edible organic materials to produce these bio-lubricants provides obvious economic and environmental benefits of putting current tribological expertise to use. Additionally, the review article will conclude with the challenges that contemporary bio-lubricants must face and the prospects for green tribology in the future. Two important variables in the debate over the sustainability of employing these potential tribological applications are biodegradability and renewability. The acquisition and use of planetary lubricants generated from renewable resources that are low in toxicity and biodegradable are being prioritized in order to reduce industrial pollution exacerbated by spillage and leakage of these materials into the environment. These alternatives are not only championed as effective substitutes for the conventional mineral-oriented lubricant but must be considered for sustained human existence. To maintain equipment integrity and reduce overall energy losses, many industrial processes rely on the effective use of contemporary tribological expertise. Lubricating oils have a large environmental impact and have the potential to contaminate land and water. To reduce the incidence of improperly disposed of lubricating mineral substances capable of adversely affecting the soil and water, producers of this substance are being pressured to employ less ecologically hazardous lubricants. Therefore, the relevant literature on this subject and the chemical characteristics thereof has been deemed seminal along with recent publications to arrive at a conclusive and credible study.
