Monitoring methods and techniques for censusing black rhinoceros Diceros bicornis bicornis in Etosha National Park

Abstract

Water-hole census techniques are described. Systematic recording of animals visiting water-hole at night yielded data on the population size and structure, and frequency of drinking of this species. Censusing at a water-hole accounted for 32% more animals than a total aerial count by helicopter, and 70% more animals than by using a fixed-wing aircraft. -from Author
